What We Believe

Are there rules at The Nazareth House?
A recovering man can live at The Nazareth House as long as he maintains complete abstinence from alcohol and drugs, pays his equal share of house expenses ($70-80/week) and does not interrupt the continuity of the House. Employment is required and resources are provided in the local neighborhood if employment is needed. If a member is not able to work, volunteer activity is required. Visitors are welcome but overnight stays by guests are prohibited. While attendance at 12 step meetings is not mandated, it is strongly encouraged.  Violence or theft is reason for immediate discharge. House members, by majority vote, can elect to ask any member to leave if their behavior threatens the integrity of the House. Attendance at weekly House meetings is required.
How long can someone live at The Nazareth House?
As long as the recovering member does not use drugs or drink, pay their share of expenses and are not disruptive to the House, they can stay as long as they need to.
The Nazareth House Concept
A democratically run, self-supporting, drug free home. There is no house manager or paid staff.

Nazareth House
Brings wholeness and healing to men recovering from alcohol and other drugs. It is a safe House where men can live within a fellowship that is supportive to a goal of continued and comfortable sobriety. When men stop drinking and drugging and want to stay stopped, participation in Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous provides a framework for physical, emotional and spiritual change. The Nazareth House provides a new living environment without fear of sliding backwards because of loneliness or destructive environments. Our philosophy states that dependency is best overcome by acceptance of responsibility. Each House member has an equal voice in making decisions while acting in the best interests of the House as a whole. Committed recovering volunteers, pastoral support for spiritual counseling and the congregation of Nazareth Lutheran Church provide an additional support system.
Where is the Nazareth House?
We are located at 3405-3407 Bank Street and on Dundalk Ave next to St. Lukes Lutheran. Our House can accommodate eight men. The House is located near major bus lines and within walking distance to daily/nightly 12 step meetings.
Who manages the Nazareth House?
The Nazareth House is self-supported by the residents who live there. House members elect four positions: President, Treasurer, Comptroller and Jobs Coordinator every month.
How much sobriety or clean time is needed before one can be accepted?
There is no time requirement. Generally, a person would be accepted after completing a detox or inpatient program, however, that is not necessary. Sincerity and a desire for a new way of life will be evaluated at the interview.
How does one get in The Nazareth House?
For now, contact Nazareth Church at 410-732-3125 for an interview. Any drug addict or alcoholic can apply by completing an application and being interviewed by House members. A majority vote by house members is needed for acceptance.
